JOINT ACTION Leave Snowden alone...
More than 150 civil society organisations from around the world have written to President Barack Obama asking him to end the prosecution of Edward Snowden. ARTICLE 19 coordinated the global action, bringing together human rights, digital rights and media freedom campaigners to urge the US administration to acknowledge Snowden as a whistleblower in need of protection.
ARTICLE 19's executive director, Agnes Callamard wrote a letter to the Editor of the Guardian newspaper and our 150 partners garnered press attention worldwide, including in France, Poland, Romania, Lithuania and Nigeria among others. ARTICLE 19 staff across the world delivered a “Welcome to the Job” card for the newly elected President Rohani. The card, sent to mark his first week in the job, asks him to stick to his campaign promises to promote freedom of expression. Iranian embassies and offices in Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, USA and the UK all received a copy.

Ukrainian human rights defender, Dmytro Groysman, known as Dima to his friends, was buried in his hometown of Vinnytsa yesterday. The campaigner died from a heart attack earlier this week. ARTICLE 19 has written together with partners to special rapporteurs to raise concern about the cases of a blogger, a photographer and a cameraman in Bahrain. Mohammed Hassan, Hussain Hubail and Qassim Zain Aldeen have been arrested and arbitrarily detained in the country. We are requesting an urgent intervention to secure their immediate release.
