NATO to support Ukrainian army report

NATO looks forward to working with the new president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, and intends to support reforms in Ukraine's security and defense sector, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said.

"NATO looks forward to working with the new president of Ukraine and is committed to supporting reforms in Ukraine's security and defense sector," he said at a press conference in Brussels.

In his words, NATO member states will finalize a comprehensive package of long-term measures to make Ukraine's reforms more effective, and its armed forces stronger.

Rasmussen said that defense ministers of NATO member states have agreed to reinforce collective defense with more air and sea patrols, and through more exercises and training from the Baltic to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean."

"We agreed that we will continue to reinforce NATO's collective defense, with more air and sea patrols, and more exercises and training. From the Baltic to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean," he said.

Aviano Air Base participates in Exercise Adriatic Strike 2014
31st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy:  F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 31st Fighter Wing are providing close air support during Exercise Adriatic Strike 2014 in Postojna, Slovenia this week. Slovenia first hosted Adriatic Strike, an exercise focused on training Joint Terminal Attack Controllers or JTACs, in 2012.

The Slovenian government has invited JTACs from the Austrian, Belgian, Czech, Montenegrin, French, Croatian, Latvian, Hungarian and Slovenian militaries to participate in this marquee training event. The main goals of the exercise are enhancing JTAC interoperability and technical expertise.

Each day, aircraft from Aviano Air Base will fly to the main Slovenian Air Force training range to simulate the combat close air support that JTACs are responsible for coordinating. The F-16 is a multirole fighter that flies a variety of missions to include suppression of enemy air defense, offensive counter air, defensive counter air, close air support and forward air controller missions.

NATO To Finalize Military Aid Package For Ukraine

BRUSSELS: NATO's top official says the alliance will finalize a package to reform and modernize Ukraine's armed forces...

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen made the announcement on June 3 following a meeting of defense ministers from NATO's 28 member countries in Brussels.

"In the weeks to come we will finalize a comprehensive package of long-term measures to make Ukraine's reforms more effective and its armed forces stronger," he said.

Rasmussen declined to give details about the measures under consideration, but said he was encouraged that in addition to NATO assistance, individual members of the alliance have volunteered advisory and technical assistance, as well as material support, to Ukraine.

A final decision on the assistance package will be made when NATO foreign ministers meet later this month.

"All in all, you will see a very strong commitment from NATO and NATO allies to help support Ukraine," Rasmussen said.

The Ukraine crisis has assumed center stage at this week's summit, where Rasmussen and other NATO officials have reiterated their position that the Kremlin's annexation of Crimea in March presents the most serious security threat to the Euro-Atlantic community since the end of the Cold War.

Rasmussen said the defense ministers agreed to bolster the alliance's defense capabilities, in part by stepping up its activities across the European continent.

"We agreed that we will continue to reinforce NATO's collective defense with more air and sea patrols and more exercises and training from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean," he said.

The potential deployment of permanent troops to NATO's eastern-most allies in response to the Ukraine crisis has drawn considerable attention in Brussels this week.

Both the U.S. ambassador to the alliance and a senior NATO official said on June 2 that the defense ministers would discuss the possibility of such deployments in member countries formerly controlled by the Soviet Union, a move Moscow considers in violation of a 1997 cooperation deal between NATO and Russia.

Rasmussen insisted that "all the steps we are going to take will be possible to realize within the framework of the NATO-Russia Founding Act from 1997."

A senior NATO official said earlier this week that a key phrase in the agreement could be reinterpreted by the alliance to allow "substantial" NATO forces to be stationed "permanently" in member states on its eastern borders.

...

Rasmussen also praised U.S. President Barack Obama's announcement earlier in the day that Washington plans to boost its military presence in Europe with additional equipment and troops, and that he has asked the U.S. Congress to approve up to $1 billion to finance the initiative.

"This is a timely and important contribution that reinforces the steps NATO has already taken," he said.

Also on June 3, the NATO defense ministers met with Ukraine's acting defense minister, Mykhaylo Koval, under the auspices of the NATO-Ukraine Commission. They are slated to speak with Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania on June 4 in a meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, there have been fresh clashes between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russia separatists around the eastern city of Slovyansk.

Defense Ministry spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov said two soldiers were killed and 42 wounded in the fighting on June 3.

He said around 300 separatists were killed or wounded. The figure could not be independently confirmed.

Ukraine's prosecutor-general said a total of 181 people, including 59 servicemen, had been killed by "terrorist activity" since hostilities broke out in April.

The fighting in Slovyansk followed a daylong firefight in Luhansk on June 2 where separatists attacked a border guard camp.

Meanwhile, local officials said eight people were killed in an explosion in the city center of Luhansk on June 2.

The separatists said the blast came from a Ukrainian air strike, but the Ukrainian military said it was caused by a missile misfired by the insurgents.

NATO-Georgia Commission discusses Ukraine crisis, Georgia’s progress on reforms

NATO Defence Ministers met with their Georgian counterpart, Irakli Alasania, on Wednesday (4 June) to discuss the regional implications of Russia’s illegal aggression against Ukraine and to review Georgia’s progress in reforming its defence sector. “NATO Allies do not, and will not, recognise Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

“Neither do we accept Russia’s recognition of the South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions of Georgia as independent states. NATO stands up for the right of every nation to make its own sovereign choice on foreign and security policy,” he said.

Regarding Georgia’s path to NATO membership, Mr Fogh Rasmussen welcomed the good progress made on reforms, saying that these have made Georgia’s defence and security sectors more transparent and accountable. “We look forward to further implementation of reforms and we will continue to assist you in this process,” the Secretary General said.

Georgia is one of the largest non-NATO contributors to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan and the Secretary General commended Georgia for its outstanding role in NATO operations. Georgia has also committed to contributing to the new NATO-led mission to train, advise and assist Afghan forces after 2014 and has offered to contribute to the NATO Response Force in 2015.

“Let me make clear that we stand by the decision we made at our Bucharest Summit in 2008,” Mr Fogh Rasmussen said. “Georgia will be a member of NATO, provided that it fulfils the requirements of membership. Alliance Foreign Ministers will discuss Georgia’s aspirations at our meeting later this month. And I am confident that our Wales Summit in September will recognize Georgia’s progress.”

Ukrainian Army Shelling of Hospital in Donetsk Region Left 25 Dead

MOSCOW: At least 25 people were killed in Tuesday's shelling of a hospital in the town of Krasnyi Lyman in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, representatives of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) said Wednesday.

“Chairman of the Supreme Council of the DPR, Denis Pushilin said over 25 people were killed by Ukrainian law-enforcement officers in the Krasnyi Lyman hospital,” the republic said on its official Twitter page.

City council officials in Krasnyi Lyman told RIA Novosti early on Wednesday that a hospital in the town was hit by mortar rounds on Tuesday night.

Intense fighting broke out Tuesday in the Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region as pro-Kiev forces stormed the cities of Slaviansk and Krasnyi Lyman.

At least ten civilians and eight self-defense troops died in the fighting near Krasnyi Lyman, according to independence supporters. Several buildings were damaged, including residential houses.

Ukraine’s Special Forces said that the fights near Slaviansk and Krasnyi Lyman killed 300 and injured 500 self-defense officers.

The Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics declared themselves independent states following the referendums in May and soon started to form governments and law enforcement agencies. The interim Kiev government refused to recognize the legitimacy of any of these decisions and continued the military operation launched mid-April against the independence supporters in the regions. Moscow has repeatedly condemned the new Kiev authorities for what it called "a punitive operation" and stressed the need for de-escalation of the Ukrainian crisis.

On June 3, Russia circulated a draft UN Security Council resolution urging to stop violence in the east of Ukraine and set up humanitarian corridors to allow the civilians to leave the territory of the military operation.

NATO Steps up Collective Defence

NATO Defence Ministers on Tuesday, 3 June 2014, agreed to continue and further reinforce NATO’s reassurance measures in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine crisis. "This is a time for all Allies to play a part, and all Allies are doing so”, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. "Every single Ally is committing resources to our collective defence. When we say NATO’s defence is "all for one”, we mean it.”

Mr. Fogh Rasmussen strongly welcomed the United States announcement to commit 1 billion dollars to a European Reassurance Initiative as "a clear sign of America’s commitment to Europe, and the strength of the transatlantic bond.” The Secretary General also commended Poland’s intention to raise its defence spending to 2% of Gross Domestic Product.

Ministers also agreed to increase the capability, training and readiness of Allied forces to prepare for the longer-term implications of the crisis. A Readiness Action Plan, to be developed by the Wales Summit, will include measures aimed to enhance the NATO Response Force’s level of responsiveness and NATO’s intelligence and awareness; to pre-position equipment and supplies; and to focus NATO exercises even more on specific defence challenges.

Ministers approved Germany’s initiative on "Framework Nations”, which will help boost multinational cooperation to develop the forces and capabilities needed to meet NATO’s requirements and cope with new security challenges. NATO Secretary General welcomed the decision by Denmark, Germany and Poland to start work to raise the readiness of Multinational Corps North East in Poland. "This will strengthen our ability to address future threats and challenges in the region. And it is a significant contribution to our collective defence”, he said.

Ministers further agreed a new cyber-defence policy, recognising cyber as part of NATO’s collective defence. This policy will help enhance information sharing and mutual assistance between Allies, improve NATO’s cyber defence training and exercises, and boost cooperation with industry.

NATO Defence Ministers met their Ukrainian counterpart Mykhailo Koval in the NATO-Ukraine Commission. They welcomed the clear outcome of the recent presidential elections and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s security and defence reforms. A comprehensive package of measures aimed to increase the capacity and strength of the Ukrainian armed force will be finalised in the coming weeks.
